Nancy R. Koerner was born in eastern Ohio and raised in northwestern Pennsylvania. In 1976, completely disenchanted with the politics and pollution of the post-Vietnam post-Nixon era, she and her husband and infant son moved to the rainforests of Belize (Central America) as modern-day pioneers seeking what should have been a utopian existence. Instead, Nancy experienced earthquake, flood, fire, hurricane, and wild animals, as well as the darker side of human nature, surviving unspeakable domestic violence at the hands of her husband. Although Belize was a country of rare tropical splendor, at that time it was a country with NO women’s shelters, NO compassionate agencies, NO legal recourse, and NO escape.
Having recently published her own true story, Belize Survivor: Darker Side of Paradise, Nancy’s goal is to inspire other women to make the brave and often impossibly painful choices which will ultimately lead to their own redemption and autonomy. She knows through her own experience that these choices often come at a nearly unsustainable cost, yet the price of inaction can be deadly. Nancy is a living testimony to the courageous spirit of the underdog, and her story celebrates the unquenchable inner spark of humanity.
