Fuck the Snow, Let Em Ski to School: Let's Call the Public School System What It Is--Free Child Care

On Sunday, we (DC/MD/VA aka DMV aka D.C. metro) got the biggest snow that I have seen in years!!! I spent my day shoveling and sledding with my family, but apparently, there were many heated parents pissed about D.C. Public Schools keeping their schools open, delaying them only by two hours.

D.C. officials were greeted with a wintry mix of anger, frustration and approval for their decision to open schools two hours late yesterday after snow shuttered every other school system in the region.

Although the late-winter storm had largely ended by the time school doors opened, some parents complained that the city's decision did not account for the condition of streets and sidewalks that remained unplowed in many neighborhoods, creating potentially hazardous conditions. Several reported low student and teacher attendance...(read the entire article at the link above)
I understand both sides of the argument but am disappointed to see President Obama put his two cents in:
"Because of what? Some ice?" he said. "We're going to have to apply some flinty Chicago toughness to this town."
First of all, this isn't Chicago...and while I understand that there are places in the U.S. where they get several feet of snow throughout the winter, and still function as normal, a city must be prepared and equipped to handle these things. If sidewalks and neighborhood roads are not clear, obviously the city isn't prepared...OR the city doesn't give a damn about the safety of the children/people who must use utilize walking as a form of transportation.

Sure, keep the schools open, but leave the parents the opportunity to sue the school system or the government for injuries sustained on or near school property.

On the other hand, if you close the schools, all the parents that still have to go to work must figure out what to do with their kids. You know, not everyone has paid leave and such...

Teachers, if you have leave, take the leave! You work hard you deserve extra days off.

If you are a parent and you have the option, I say, fuck it, let the kids stay home! It's just school. Use it as a rest day or a day that they can get some home instruction--teach them about their Black ancestors that have laid the path for them to become the adults that they wish to be. Black history didn't have to end when the snow began.
